Snap election social security pledges

Here is an analysis of the social security pledges in the manifestos of the main political parties by NAWRA member, Richard Machin of Staffordshire University.

Regrettably, the article does not mention the Green Party. The Greens, Ukip and the main 3 parties were the only parties that each got more than a million votes in 2015, according to this BBC report.

The Green Party 2017 manifesto (see includes these main pledges on welfare and pensions, as listed by the BBC’s comparison of the 2017 manifestos:

  • Move towards a system of a “universal basic income”
  • Reinstate housing benefit for under-21s
  • Abolish the “bedroom tax”
